Let's Escape this Season
Africans have always been connected to the world around them, and the spirit within them. They've sought to strengthen their connections with rituals featuring song and dance. In some African cultures, ritual masks and costumes have been used to celebrate and share the stories of ancestors, animals and celestial beings. These masks and costumes are often hand crafted with a mix of natural materials featuring several layers of cascading fabric, feathers or raffia. They showcase the unique craftsmanship of the people of Africa with their extravagant hand embroidered details and delicate carvings. Power is woven into these sacred materials. The wearer of the mask, known as The Masker, uses his/her body as a conduit to share stories or teachings of the past or future with the rest of the village. Sometimes, The Masker becomes possessed with these spirits and uses specific movements and music to communicate. These dances and performances of The Masker, is called Masquerade. This is African History.
